Parents – Class Description:
CDI class at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School
“It gave me quite a big workout.”
- Ben, 4th Grade

“Dancing is what I learned and I lost 3 pounds from doing it. I thought it was great.”
- Steven, 3rd Grade
CDI’s rigorous weekly in-school dance classes will challenge and inspire your child both mentally and physically to reach his or her own potential. CDI’s activities encourage students to develop critical thinking skills, discipline, and fitness, and experience joy in exhilarating dance classes. CDI is committed to reaching every type of learner and creating success for each child in every class.

Staples of a CDI class:
  • Weekly 50-minute physically demanding dance classes
  • A team of two teaching artists who are professional dancers trained in the NDI teaching methodology
  • Live musical accompaniment for all classes and performances

Here’s what your child can look forward to in weekly CDI classes:
  • Warm-up: mirroring activities, call and response, “I go, you go,” reviewing steps, and introducing new ones.
  • Perfecting steps and learning choreography using different movement activities and games of healthy competition including the following examples and MORE:
    • Alphabet Game: Steps are assigned letters such as A, B, C, D and are performed in various orders, often using steps to spell words.
    • Musical games where the live accompanist changes tempo and dynamics.
    • Healthy competition between groups, and the ever-popular “Elimination Game” where students perform steps until one student who has mastered the step is left standing.
    • Dance Doctors and Judges: Students analyze peers’ work and act as "judges," "choreographers," and "dance doctors," helping classmates master steps.
  • Special Goodbye: CDI says Goodbye in a special way by traveling to different countries, or dancing to different musical genres as we thank our teachers, dancers, accompanist, and audience.
Performances:
Students in CDI classes perform twice during the 20-week program. First, they participate in a works-in-progress mid-point assembly. Second, at the end of the 20-week program, each class performs a unique class dance in culminating performances with costumes and a full live band! Learn more about performances: Lights, Costumes, Action! Or see Upcoming Events.

After-School Program: SWAT (Super Wonderful Advanced Team) and Celebration Teams
Students who show excellence in focus, behavior, energy, and effort during in-school classes are invited to join CDI’s after-school dance teams. If your child has been invited to join SWAT or Celebration, see what exciting things they have to look forward to!

Summer Camp: Dance Camp is held one week in Venice.
Children experience a variety of dance styles, improvisation and
art projects, and end each day with an afternoon swim at the
beach. At the end of the program, the summer students wow
audiences with their performance at the Venice Eco-fest, an
annual ecologically-themed free festival held in June at the
Venice Beach Boardwalk, sponsored by Earth Day L.A. and the
Venice Chamber of Commerce.

“I learned about more responsibility, self-discipline, and listening because we have to listen to the rhythm of the music and we have to listen for directions. I also learned to have more self-confidence in me.”
- Kevin, 4th grade
