CDI makes a splash at the Music Center!
On February 3rd, CDI appeared as part of a lecture-demonstration in the Eva and Marc Stern Grand Hall of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, preceding the Joffrey Ballet’s matinee performance of its signature Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring). Led by Carole Valleskey, CDI dancers performed choreography inspired by the seminal Nijinsky Ballet for a rapt standing-room-only audience. Carole and USC Annenberg Arts Journalism Director Sasha Anawalt then conducted a lecture on the history of the Nijinsky-Stravinsky collaboration, and the Joffrey Ballet’s 1987 reconstruction of the ballet. Our 30-plus participating dancers joined the audience in watching the Joffrey’s astounding production of Le Sacre du Printemps (among other repertory). It was a truly extraordinary day!

As part of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center‘s 10th Anniversary Season, the Joffrey Ballet reprised its signature Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. 2013 marks the 100th Anniversary of this historic work by Igor Stravinsky. The original choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, lost for generations, was resurrected and re-created by the Joffrey Ballet and premiered at the Los Angeles Music Center in 1987, featuring CDI artistic director Carole Valleskey in the lead role.

CDI performs at the California African American Museum
On January 21st (Martin Luther King Day), CDI appeared at the California African American Museum as part of an award ceremony for The Dream@50 National K-12 Art Contest. CDI Dancers kicked off the ceremonies performing choreography inspired by and danced to Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The performance literally had audience members in tears!
The Dream@50 is a tribute series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Including a student art contest (K-12), a world music/dance festival, and video PSAs,The Dream@50 is “a celebration of creative collaboration in both the Civil Rights Movement and the arts as the foundation for a new paradigm in how we can live together.”
