California Dance Institute wishes to thank the California Arts Council for its June 13, 2017 Artists in Schools - Extension Grant. With support from the California Arts Council, California Dance Institute (CDI) will offer after-school instruction in dance and music in underserved public schools. The CDI in-school program gives children a basic understanding of movement, rhythm and music. A selected group of children may then continue dance instruction for 1.5 hours weekly on an advanced team and perform in a professionally staged Event of the Year production with 345 dancers, 12 musicians, backdrops and lighting. Ramaa Bharadvaj brought a taste of Indian culture to CDI and New Roads School students through her workshops in November. Capping off these workshops was her performance with these students at our wonderful new place, the Herb Alpert Educational Village, Moss Theater. Ramaa was extraordinary, amazing, beautiful, special. Hope you were able to be there! |
CDI in Greece, 2014!
CDI took it’s programming to the cradle of civilization!A dozen children in the village of Lefkes on the island of Paros in Greece participated in a 10-day workshop with Artistic Director Carole Valleskey in collaboration with the Paros Jazz Academy, an international jazz summer workshop held annually on the Greek island of Paros.
Children had class two hours a day, culminating in a performance in the charming outdoor Lefkes Amphitheater accompanied by musicians from the jazz academy. The performance demonstrated the energetic, child-friendly style of dance and teaching of the California Dance Institute. The children performed to jazz favorites Thelonius Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” and “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” which led beautifully into a favorite Paros island tune for their final piece, illustrating the cross-cultural hopes of the founder and director of CDI, Ms. Valleskey. “The children here in Lefkes are like the town, charming and full of life. I so enjoyed working with them.”CDI and the town of Lefkes are hoping for this to be an annual event, ultimately bringing children from around the world to engage in this cross-cultural exchange.
Hope You Enjoyed CDI’s Event of the Year 2014
